Seasonal changes in thermogenic properties of liver and muscle in tree sparrows Passer montanus

Abstract: Seasonal changes in avian physiology and behavior are considered to be a part of an adaptive strategy for survival, and basal metabolic rate (BMR) is important component of energy budget in endotherms. In order to understand seasonal changes in cellular and hormonal thermogenic properties in tree sparrows, we measured body mass and BMR, mitochondrial protein contents, mitochondrial state 4 respiration, cytochrome C oxidase (COX) activity in liver and muscle, as well as serum triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) concentration in the summer (late June and July) and winter (late December and January). Oxygen consumption was measured using a closed-circuit respirometer, state 4 respiration in liver and muscle mitochondria was measured with a Clark electrode. Likewise, activities of COX of liver and muscle were measured using a Clark electrode. Both body mass and BMR were higher in winter than in summer, and serum T3 concentration was higher in winter than in summer. The mitochondrial state 4 respiration in liver, and COX activity in liver and muscle exhibited higher levels in winter and lower levels in summer. These data indicate that increase in thermogenic capacity at both organismal and cellular levels are important adjustments to cope with cold stress in wild tree sparrows [Acta Zoologica Sinica 54 (5): 777– 784, 2008].

Abstract: The structure of the title compound, catena-poly[[[di-μ-aqua-μ-fumarato-μ-(boric acid)-disodium]-di-μ-aqua] boric acid monosolvate], contains two crystallographically independent Na+ cations, each being six-coordinated by one fumarate O atom, one boric acid O atom and four water O atoms in a distorted octahedral geometry. Adjacent [NaO2(OH2)4] units share edges and are linked into chains propagating parallel to [100]. The free boric acid molecules are connected to the chains through strong intermolecular O—H...O hydrogen bonds. Additional O—H...O hydrogen bonds between the water molecules, the free and coordinated boric acid molecules and the fumarate anion lead to the formation of a three-dimensional supramolecular structure. With the exception of the two water molecules, all other atoms lie on mirror planes.

Abstract: Background: Smoking is the second major mortality risk factor globally. People with severe mental illness are two to three times more likely to smoke cigarettes than those without mental illness. This study aimed to reduce cigarette consumption by smokers with schizophrenia. A combined intervention consisting of auricular acupressure and a smoking cessation education program (AASCEP) was given, and its effects were evaluated. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was used. The experimental group received the AASCEP for eight weeks, whereas the control group did not. Outcomes were measured urine cotinine levels, psychiatric symptoms and heart rate variability (HRV) before and after the intervention and at 4 week follow-up. Results: After the intervention, there were significant between-group difference in SDNN and HF of the HRV parameters, but not urine cotinine levels, psychiatric symptoms, LF and LF/HF ratio. A significant between-group difference in SDNN of the HRV parameters was also observed at followup. Smoking quit rates at the 8th and 12th weeks were 19.2% and 13.5%, respectively, for the experimental group. The improvements were superior in the experimental group. Conclusion: This study supports the AASCEP could help people with schizophrenia to reduce cigarette consumption and improve autonomic modulation of the heart.

Abstract: The spike genes of 22 different TGEV strains were selected from GenBank and analysed by the Bioinformatics analysis software. The results showed that the A and C antigen sites are more conservative than B and D antigen sites. The results could establish the rationale for preparing vaccine of epitopes and diagnostic reagent.
Developing Digital Game Based on the Conception of Insects (DGBI) to Test Elementary Student’s Insect Conceptions  [PDF]

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to promote elementary school student’s conception and interest of insect. In this study, we device a digital game, which possessed scientific and fun, base on the conception of insects (DGBI), then can use it to test elementary school student’s conception about insect.

The DGBI materials creating pattern use as the ADDIE model. First step is to analyze the DGBI materials. We analyze student’s alternative conceptions of insect and what the teaching staff needs to teach in the section of insect, and then we develop three teaching units, namely the ―Bugs Adventure‖, ―Legs and Wings \"and\" Mouthparts and feeding habits‖.

Second, design the DGBI. Making DGBI has a clear teaching aim, multi-learning strategy like conception puzzle, computer simulation and conception mapping etc, an artistic and convenient operating media interface and a learning content that is easy to understand by the words and video in the DGBI materials.

Third, develop the DGBI. Developing DGBI includes making animation component and composing animation component, these animation components makes 94.4% of students prefer to use DGBI materials to learn the conceptions of insect, especially the constructional detail magnify function and interactive game design in the teaching materials increase the student’s learning interest.

Forth, implement DGBI. We invite Two national college professors and four senior science teachers to use DGBI, and then we interview them to collect the testing amendments, and corrected it.Fifth, evaluate DGBI. We use quasi-experiment design and questionnaire survey to evaluate DGBI. In the quasi-experiment design, we select 111 students for four classes in an elementary school in New Taipei City and ask them to use DGBI, and then we tested them by the ―Insects Conceptions test‖. We found that after using the DGBI materials, the student's post-test scores (13.64) is higher than the pre-test scores (7.55), and there are significant differences (t = 16.47,p = .00)and helps the student to establish the correct concept of insect.. In the questionnaire survey, we ask 6 elementary school teachers to write down the ―digital materials quality certification evaluation form‖ after using DGBI. The teachers think that DGBI has an organizational integrity of the insect teaching material. When using DGBI, they can teach the insect unit as a game, and student can learn the insect unit on student's own initiative, which allows students to study the conceptions of insect step-by-step.

Abstract: The effects of arsenic(As)were investigated on seed germination,root and shoot length and their biomass and some other factorsto elucidate the toxicity of As.The results showed low concentrations of As(0-1 mg/kg)stimulated seed germination and thegrowth of root and shoot,however,these factors all decreased gradually at high concentrations of As(5-20 mg/kg).The contentsof O2.-,MDA,soluble protein and peroxidase(POD)activity all increased with increasing As concentrations.Soluble sugar content,ascorbate peroxidase(APX),and superoxide dismutase(SOD)activities decreased at low concentrations of As,and increased at highconcentrations of As.While acetylsalicylic acid(ASA)and chlorophyll contents,catalase(CAT)activity displayed increasing trendwhen the concentrations of As was lower than 1 mg/kg,and then decreasing trend.By polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis(PAGE),Asinduced the expression of POD isozymes of wheat seedlings.As induced the expression of CAT isozymes but inhibited the expressionof SOD isozymes of wheat seedlings at concentrations lower than 1 mg/kg.However,As inhibited the expression of CAT isozymes butinduced the expression of SOD isozymes at concentrations higher than 5 mg/kg.The results indicated As could exert harmfulness inthe early development stage of wheat at inappropriate concentrations.
Measurement Feedback Self-Tuning Weighted Measurement Fusion Kalman Filter for Systems with Correlated Noises

Abstract: For the linear discrete stochastic systems with multiple sensors and unknown noise statistics, an online estimators of the noise variances and cross-covariances are designed by using measurement feedback, full-rank decomposition, and weighted least squares theory. Further, a self-tuning weighted measurement fusion Kalman filter is presented. The Fadeeva formula is used to establish ARMA innovation model with unknown noise statistics. The sampling correlated function of the stationary and reversible ARMA innovation model is used to identify the noise statistics. It is proved that the presented self-tuning weighted measurement fusion Kalman filter converges to the optimal weighted measurement fusion Kalman filter, which means its asymptotic global optimality. The simulation result of radar-tracking system shows the effectiveness of the presented algorithm.

Abstract: Turbulent bubbly air/water two-phase up and down flows in bubble column were investigated. Important flow quantities such as local void fraction, liquid velocity and the turbulence intensity were measured using both LDV and PIV. the presence of the bubbles increased the level of turbulence in the flow. Measurements of liquid velocities in bubble columns, of different superficial gas velocities, and of different height, the flow structures show tours vortices and axisymetric flow.
